Yes, you read it right. Rice water that our moms throw away in the sink every time she cooks our dinner. 

What is rice water and what are the benefits of rice water?

As simple as it sounds, rice water is just the water that we get after rinsing the rice before cooking it. In different parts of Asia like China and Japan, rice water for hair growth has been practised for decades. Rice water contains vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that help in strengthening the hair by restoring the hair’s elasticity.

If you have thin hair, it is best to use rice water every 10 days. But if you have thick hair, you can use rice water every 5 days. Rice water contains protein. And too much protein in your hair can cause your strands to dry out. But overall, rice water is safe that you can even use it for your skin.

Rice water can make your hair stronger and promotes hair growth. It is also said to make the hair shinier and smoother. Although there is no scientific proof to back up these claims, there are still many that swear by the benefits that they get from using rice water.

How do you make rice water for your curly hair?

Making rice water for hair is so easy. So easy that you can just ask your mom to save the rice water when she is cooking rice for your dinner. But you can also do it on your own. You can use any kind of rice and you will get the same result. Here are a few easy steps on how to make rice water

  1. Get a bowl of rice and add in the water. You can soak the rice in the water for an hour or you can stain it immediately. 
  2. Strain the cloudy and starchy water to separate from the rice grains.
  3. Keep in a clean container. You can keep the rice water in the fridge in case you are not yet using it, or if you have any leftovers. It can be stored in the fridge for up to 5 days.

How to use rice water for your curls?

1. As a rinse

This is the most common way to use rice water. After shampooing, use the rice water as a rinse. Massage onto the hair and scalp and leave it for a few minutes before rinsing out. Rinse out the rice water and apply your regular conditioner.

2. As a leave-in

Another way to use rice water is as a leave-in conditioner. If you have any rice water sitting in the fridge for a few days, this is the perfect leave-in conditioner for your hair. 

3. As a hydrating mist

Rice water is a starchy solution that can help in setting up the hair. Just put the rice water in a clean bottle and use it as a hydrating mist.
